Training of basic knowledge of organic chemistry, reading and presentation skill in English, and exercises to catch the key points of the corresponding research areas.
One should have a bachelor degree in Chemistry related subjects.
1). Choose an article related to organic chemistry or organic materials (not a review or an account article), which is published within the past 6 months and is worthy enough for Graduate Seminar (Recommended Journals: Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., Chem. Commun., Chem. Eur. Journal, Chemical Science, J. Am. Chem. Soc., J. Org. Chem., and Org. Lett.). 2). Upload selected paper and its supporting information two weeks before your presentation to class webpage in E3 campus. 3). Read thoroughly and prepare an abstract and upload it to New E3 campus one week before your presentation. Please bring sufficient copies to the class on the day of your presentation. 4). Prepare a brief curriculum vitae (including name, study program, research group, where you obtain your BS degree, seminar topic, hobby) and send it to Professor one week before your presentation. On the date of your presentation, give it to your presider. 5). Prepare your PowerPoint slides (full introduction-6 slides, motivation-1~2 slides, results and discussion-10~15 slides, characterization example-3~5 slides, conclusion-1 slide) 6). Practice to present in English as much as possible which can be assisted with a recording device; you may revise your slides after practices and do this over to reach toward the state that you can present precisely and fluently. Presentation with a draft is not permitted! You will not pass this seminar if you do so. Please control your presentation time in 35 minutes. We will do discussion for 10-15 minutes. Presentation: 1). Be ready with your PowerPoint slides and pointer, we will start seminar right at 9:00 AM! 2). The speakers of following week will preside over the seminar, including opening remarks, Q&A, and closing notes. 3). Presentation should be completed in 35 minutes, leave 10-15 minutes for discussion. After presentation: Please upload your presentation slides (power point file) to New E3 campus on the same date after your presentation. Your semester grade will be discounted due to delayed upload. Other notes: Be present in class even though you have done your presentation. You will have to turn in your audience notes right after seminar.
Attendance including quizzes: 10%; Presentation: 60%; Questions and Answers: 30%.
