概述

This course introduces graduate students (and interested undergraduate students) to some significant fields in literary studies. Instead of going for a comprehensive survey, we will highlight some classic and recent texts in five relevant fields (women's studies, gay and lesbian studies, queer studies, transgender studies, and transnational studies) in order to see how literary theory evolves and diversifies. We will also discuss Jamaica Kincaid's 1990 novel Lucy along with one relevant essay in order to explore the relationship between literary theory and literature. This course will end with students' presentations on literary theory and/or Lucy.

Participation (1) I will start class on time and make public announcements. If you are late, you miss important information at your own risk. (2) If you have to be absent, please let me know in advance and use the Students Leave System. Legitimate leaves will exempt you from the deduction of participation grade. Undocumented and unexcused leaves will affect your participation grade. (3) If you do not speak in class, I will call on you. Response Papers (1) Whenever we have readings that week, you may post your questions or observations (l00-200 words, not including quotations) on our New E3 course website at least 24 hours before class. (2) Throughout the term, you should have at least 10 posts. (3) These are risk-free exercises: as long as you post responses in a timely manner, you will get 3 points (30 points in total). However, if you (1) miss page number(s) when you cite or paraphrase passages, (2) pay little attention to your writing (for example, turn in a response paper riddled with grammatical errors), or (3) ask vague questions or simply repeat others' questions, I will dock 0.5-1 point for each kind of slip. Individual Presentation(s) (1) Depending on the number of enrolled students, we may have one or two rounds of individual presentations. (2) Presenters need to prepare 3-5 questions and facilitate class discussion. The questions could be based on people's response papers. Always refer to specific passages during your presentation. Final Papers (1) If you have written a paper on Lucy, you may not turn in the same paper for this course. If you do not write on Lucy, you may choose to explore one issue relevant to one of our theoretical readings. Ideally, this assignment should provide the foundation for your future literary studies in a particular field. (2) Length: 8-10 pages (double-spaced), including notes and the Works Cited section. Email Exchanges (1) Please do not email me directly via New E3. It is difficult to reply when I am reading your message on my phone. If you have any question, please send your message to chku@nctu.edu.tw. (2) Please call me Prof. Ku, Chung-Hao, CHK, or Richard. (3) Emails are for short notifications. If you have a list of questions, please ask me in class, make appointments, or visit me during my office hours. (4) Please identify yourself in your message. Give me your Chinese/English names and student ID number, please. (5) Your message should come with an appropriate subject line: for example, Questions about __________ (Introduction to Literary Studies). An appropriate subject line will help me retrieve your message. On the safe side, I will delete your message if you do not have any subject line.
