Science Fiction Short Story and Film Special Topic: Film Adaptations of Short Fiction This introduction to science fiction films and contemporary short stories aims to explore key film and made-for-TV adaptations of short fiction into what is primarily science fiction (though usually including other film genres, such as drama, romance, action, comedy, or horror). The writers focused upon this semester include Philip K. Dick (the featured writer), as well as Ted Chiang, William Gibson, Stephen King, Richard Matheson, Brian Aldiss, James Blish, Harlan Ellison, Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Larry Niven, George R. R. Martin, John W. Campbell, Harry Bates, and H. G. Wells. We will discuss clips of films and read short stories so as to analyze cultural antagonisms reflected in the works and various (social, political, ecological, philosophical) issues defining the period in which they were created and how their significance changes over time.
