音韻專題:音韻結構與語音感知

This course covers the relationship between phonological structure and speech perception. We will start by reviewing the basic acoustic properties of speech sounds and move onto topics in speech perception. Specific topics include phonetic categorization, phonological distribution, linguistic experience, lexical effects, tone/stress perception, and social factors. While familiarizing students with current theories in speech perception, students will have a chance to have firsthand experience with perceptual experiments. The instructor will suggest possible topics and provide speech materials for small-scale experiments and students will design & run experiments with hands-on guidance from the course TAs. wk 2-4 Basic acoustics & Praat wk5-8 Phonological structure and speech perception wk10-14 Phonological structure and other factors & Group project

No designated textbook; we will be reading research articles which will be made available on New E3 as needed.
