This course introduces graduate students to theories, research, and practices in teaching English as a second or foreign language (TESOL or TEFL). The aim is to familiarize the students with the growing field of TESOL and provides students with a strong theoretical background in the field. Students in this class are informed by TESOL research and scholarship and are encouraged to recognize the insights obtained from reading current research. An individual student or a small group of students will teach in an EFL class and demonstrate their familiarity with effective EFL teaching strategies. Throughout the semester, the students will develop individual online learning/teaching portfolios which reflect their learning progress. Upon completion of this course students will be able to: 1. Identify teaching approaches and practice instructional methods of researched-informed teaching strategies for English learners; 2. Demonstrate knowledge of pertinent TESOL research; 3. Evaluate online and offline TESOL teaching materials and resources; and 4. Demonstrate a reflective attitude toward their own learning and teaching processes.

1. Regular attendance and class participation (10%) 2. Discussion facilitation and participation (25%) 3. Teaching Observation (15%) 4. Teaching demos and peer- and self-evaluation (25%) 5. Online participation (25%) Note:All assignments must be typed, double-spaced, have fonts no larger than 12-points. Proper use of APA style is expected (http://www.cs.vu.nl/~faai/Online%20Writing%20Lab.htm). Late assignments will NOT be accepted. The only exception will be in the case of a family or medical emergency. Please feel free to speak with me (e-mail is fine) if you have any questions regarding the class.
