概述

This course introduces students to the history and aesthetics of documentary and the essay film. We will read history and theory texts as well as watch film texts, so that students who do not have training in film studies can fully comprehend the aesthetic and political issues at stake for filmmakers and theorists. We will also have two class sessions in which contemporary Taiwanese filmmakers are invited to show their films and participate in discussions. These events include director HO Chao-ti screening & discussion (9/25, Friday) and director TSAI Tsung-lung screening & discussion (10/29). Attending these screenings and Q & As is mandatory. Selected films from the 2020 Women Make Waves Taiwan International Festival will be screened on 11/27, 12/4, and 12/11 at NCTU Cinema for the Arts (Room #326 of Humanities Building 2). Students who take this course are required to attend the screenings unless they have other class meetings on these Friday afternoons. Students who take this course may write a term-paper or produce a documentary or an essay film as the final project for the class.

This is a graduate seminar—which means that students are expected to be active participants rather than passive consumers in the class. 1. In-class presentation and discussion: 30% 1.1) Each week, students should take turns to give a brief presentation (30 minutes) of weekly assigned materials. 1.2) Those who are not presenting should also read course materials in advance and share their reading notes on Slack. 1.3) In addition to their notes on course readings (many of which are rather brief by the standard of a graduate-level course), students should also upload their notes on the films we have watched and discussed in the previous week to Slack. *The notes are due every Thursday at 8am. Graduate students should upload their notes on course readings and film texts every week. Undergraduate students should post their notes every three weeks at least. * Those who are absent for more than 3 times will get a “zero” grade for this item. 2. Final Project: 50 % *Students who take this course have two options to pursue their final projects: 3.1) For students who want to write a term paper: Please write a paper of 20-25pages (For undergrad students: 15 pages).
