Course Description The thesis seminar course is especially designed for cultural studies / humanities and social science students, whose English serve as their second / third / fourth... language, to write their theses reachable to regional and international audience. Native English-speaking students would also find this thesis seminar useful. What is a thesis? How should I start? This course will cover different aspects of thesis writing, and we will learn the different components of a thesis and how to write a thesis by doing and by working individually and collegially. The course starts with organizing a thesis. We will answer the following questions: What is literature review and why is it important? How to identify a research gap? How to formulate a research question? How do I report my research? Then, the course discusses the importance of academic integrity and how to avoid academic misconduct. Lectures, in-class revision of sample writings, discussions, and students’ presentations are to be used in the course. Intended Learning Outcomes Upon the successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of key components and structure of a thesis, academic integrity and how to avoid academic misconduct; 2. Formulate a research question; 3. Choose appropriate language and style, and to communicate with the peers and wider audience 4. Assessment This is a continuous assessment course. Active and contributive in-class participation is essential. There are small writing tasks, including annotated bibliography, and literature review. In this course, students are required to submit and present their thesis proposals for peer evaluations. Students are required to submit a revised thesis proposal by the end of the course. Contribution and participation in class 35% Annotated Bibliography 10% Review Essay 10% Thesis Proposal Mid-term presentation 15% Thesis Proposal (End-term) 30%
