Course Description This course aims to provide an introduction of major issues in our contemporary world, mainly focusing on the aspect of international relations and international organizations, in order to nurture, facilitate and expend students’ global perspectives as world citizens. This course is designed to familiarize students with various important issues in our global environment. We live in an increasingly globalized society, which generates both new opportunities and challenges. Nowadays, rarely few countries and people could isolate themselves from the impacts of outside world. The significance of the course is to enhance students’ interests and abilities in comprehending how and what the global society is composed of, operated and governed. Hence, this course covers several crucial subjects, including: international politics, international conflict, international trade and finance, multinational corporations, regional integration, environment and climate change, and globalization, etc. Through lectures and class discussion, students would be able to have profound understanding about the major issues in our contemporary world, while facilitating individual’s critical thinking, unique perspectives and analytical abilities on these global issues. Objectives of the Course By the end of the course, students should be able to: 1. Develop basic understanding regarding major issues in our contemporary world and constant attention to international news. 2. Familiarize with and utilize various perspectives in comprehending major global issues. 3. Enhance the ability of critical thinking, argument-making, and deliberate discourse.
Competent in English
1. The course will be conducted by the instructor’s lecture with PPT presentations, combining with the agenda-guided class discussion. Students need to be fully prepared and be familiar with the assigned readings before the class. 2. E3 teaching website and Facebook class discussion forum will be used.
