Freshman English Curriculum Guidelines 1082 Revision Freshman English is a series of 4-skill integrated English courses designed for non-English major freshman students at NCTU. The curriculum aims help students reach toward high-intermediate proficiency equivalent to CEFR B2 level. The curriculum consists of two courses: Freshman English (I) and Freshman English (II). All instructors must follow the course objectives and course evaluation to structure the curriculum. In addition, the textbook selected by each instructor must come from the suggested list of textbooks unless special conditions are approved by the LTRC curriculum committee Freshman English (I) Course Objective: Freshman English I is an integrated course designed to develop students’ four English skills (listening, speaking, reading, & writing) with an emphasis on speaking and listening. In this course, students will: Identify listening problems and develop listening strategies and skills, Gain confidence in speaking and improve speaking fluency, pronunciation, and conversation strategies, Develop general reading skills, including word skills and comprehension strategies, Develop writing fluency by giving students opportunities to articulate ideas in short writings of approximately 170-200 words. For example, students can respond to topics addressed in class through writing assignments that focus on content and expression of ideas, rather than the structure of the written English. Other practical examples could include emails, note-taking, letter writing or comments.
