Freshman English I is an integrated course designed to develop students' four English skills (listening, speaking, reading, & writing) with an emphasis on speaking and listening. In this course, students will a) Identify listening problems and develop listening strategies and skills, b) Gain confidence in speaking and improve speaking fluency, pronunciation, and conversation strategies, c) Develop general reading skills, including word skills and comprehension strategies, d) Develop writing fluency by writing a short passage in 170-200 words.
Students should come to the class with the assigned homework completed and are expected to actively participate in class time activities. To receive full credit in attendance, students must arrive to class on time and participate for the full session. Only 3 excused absences are allowed. After that, 20 points will be taken away from your attendance grade for each of your absences. Notify the instructor if you will be unable to participate. During the weekly class time, the class will read text/listen to audio clips on various topics and respond to the reading/audio input orally. Students will be engaged in various class activities, such as whole-class discussion, pair and group work, and role play. Some of the in-class activities require you to complete assignments in advance. Assignment completion and participation in these in-class activities are requirements and will be a part of your course grade. The mid-term and final exams aim to evaluate students' English listening, speaking, and reading competence in the various topics covered in class. The writing assignment aims to develop students' fluency in writing English. You are required to write a passage of 170 to 200 words in English (typed in MS Word document, double-spaced) to respond to an assigned topic covered in class. You will also learn to produce a final written product in several drafts. It is a requirement for students to complete 4 online GEPT practice tests (http://140.113.9.12:800/) by week 16. In addition, one paper and pencil practice test will be given in class. The exam is about 85 minutes (35 minutes for the listening test and 50 minutes for the reading test). The Read and Talk project asks the students to read an artifact, article or book of your own choice and share your response orally with the class. Detail instruction will be provided in class. The group presentation is designed to give students an opportunity to look into a topic and present your findings to the class. You will work in a group of 4 or 5 to prepare for and present your findings in English to the whole class. Additional direction on the presentation topics and presentation strategies will be provided in class. Academic Integrity All students are expected to adhere to the University policy concerning academic integrity. Cheating on the exam or other required activities will result in the failure of this course. *Please note that the course schedule and content listed in the syllabus is tentative. Minor changes and adjustment might be made to accommodate unexpected circumstances.
