Freshman English I is an integrated course designed to develop students’ four English skills (listening, speaking, reading, & writing) with an emphasis on speaking and listening. In this course, students will: - Identify listening problems and develop listening strategies and skills, - Gain confidence in speaking and improve speaking fluency, pronunciation, and conversation strategies, - Develop general reading skills, including word skills and comprehension strategies, - Develop writing fluency by giving students opportunities to articulate ideas in short writings of approximately 170-200 words. For example, students can respond to topics addressed in class through writing assignments that focus on content and expression of ideas, rather than the structure of the written English. Other practical examples could include emails, note-taking, letter writing or comments.
*欲修課者,第一堂請務必準時到課,否則視為自動放棄修課權利* The teacher will distribute and explain a detailed syllabus with a tentative course schedule in the first class meeting. If you are absent without contacting the teacher first, you will be automatically removed from the list.
Attendance: 10% Reading circle for extensive reading: 30% (both role sheet and in-class group discussion) In-class or after-class activities for intensive reading (translation, summarizing, presentation, etc.): 20% Group PPT presentation: 20% Final Presentation: 20% Reading Circle Presentation: Final group presentations of books read in reading circles: 20%

Reading materials will be made available on New e3. Book-length readings will be made available through the English teaching and Research Center or purchased after the literature circle groups decide on the books they want to read.
