先修科目

Prerequisites *第一堂課必須要到! 沒到的學生,會被自動退選! The teacher will distribute and explain a detailed syllabus on the first class. Unless you have a good reason, please do not be absent. If you are absent without prior notice, you will be automatically removed from the list.

教學方式

 Participate: Learning is a social act and can be best achieved within a community of learners (this class) through engaging, collaborative, and participatory class discussions. Each student is expected to engage in the assigned readings carefully, actively, and critically and come prepared to be an active participant of class discussions. Your individual contributions and serious participation in class activities benefit the entire community of learners (the class).  Be an independent learner: You and you alone are responsible for your learning (not the instructor), and you also have an impact on the learning of others. Just going through the motions of completing course assignments at the bare minimum level of effort is not the type of academic work that earns a good grade. Points will be deducted off late work. If you feel you might have difficulty turning in any assignments, please contact me as soon as possible before the due date.  Attend all classes: Attendance will be taken in every class and the class does not allow any excused absences. That means not coming to class even with a legitimate reason or excuse will result in no attendance and participation marks for that class. Having said that, students do not need to email the teacher with an excuse since no points will be granted for not showing up to class. However, please note that more than 3 unexcused absences with no further explanation denotes a lack of effort and dedication to the course and will result in a direct failure of the course. Take this course only if you are sure that you can dedicate time and effort.

評分方式

 10% Attendance If you miss class, you cannot make up any of it afterwards. Coming to class and being an active learner is very important in this course.  10% Participation This includes quizzes, in-class activities, and homework. The more you participate, the higher your score will be.  20% Summary presentations (5 min) You will be broken down into groups (4 groups). The teacher will first lead the discussion on the topic of the week. Then groups will have time to prepare a short summary presentation. Then one random group will be chosen to make a summary presentation. Students will be graded on their ability to summarize the content and their delivery skills. Each group has ONE chance to do a summary presentation and will be given one score of the whole group.  5% Notes Groups will produce a summary of the discussion topic which will be collected and assessed. General flow of this type of activity: Teacher will lead the discussion while students participate and contribute > all groups will prepare a summary >1 group will be chosen to present their summary> teacher collects notes from all groups  10% Impromptu speaking Students will be put in groups of 4 and take on different roles for different sessions. When the student is a speaker, he/she will deliver an impromptu speech and will be assessed by the teacher.  5% VOD passport - Each student is required to attend at least 5 sessions of English Table held by NCTU Language Center (for more information: http://ltrc.nctu.edu.tw/). You need to collect a stamp or the teacher’s signature on the VOD Passport after each session you attend. - Another option is attending Toastmaster’s International, a club that focuses on English public speaking skills. You may attend Toastmaster’s in place of 5 English Tables. For more information please visit http://hsinchu.toastmastersclubs.org/  20% Midterm (Oral exam) Students will take individual oral exams that will be recorded. The recordings will be uploaded on E3, so that students can re-listen/watch their response and learn from their mistakes.  20% Individual Final Presentations (10 min) Students will deliver an individual presentation on a topic of their choice (approved by the teacher). Your presentation should include activities/content that encourage class participation. Be creative and use the skills learnt in class.
