At the end of this course, the students are expected to develop the following skills and abilities: 1. Applications of computer-aided methods to analyze and design a new structure and its foundation against natural hazards including typhoons and earthquakes. 2. Preparation of a professional engineering design report. 3. Plotting the building plans, structural design plans, foundation plans. 4. Preparation of construction method statements, scheduling, and a management plan. 5. Professional presentation (in forms of oral, written, and physical models) of the proposed design and construction plans to clients.

Each 5-6 students will form a group and will be guided by the instructor and teaching assistants to complete one of the following 3 tentative design projects. Project 1: Design a multi-story office building; Project 2: Design a cable-stayed bridge over the waterfall; Project 3: Design the substructure for an off-shore wind turbine.
期中報告 - preliminary design report (presentation) (30%); 期末報告 -final design report (drawings, design report, presentation/physical models) (70%) 評分方法依照NewE3 上公告之"學生核心能力設定及指標 (Rubrics)"

| 第 6 週 | Basic wind and earthquake load calculation, modeling methods, and analysis |
| 第 7 週 | Review of RC member design as per ACI 318 (I) |
| 第 8 週 | Group presentation (15-20 mins for each group) on the preliminary design (structural + foundation scheme drawings). |
| 第 9 週 | Review of RC member design as per ACI 318 (II) |
| 第 10 週 | Introduction to prestressed concrete design |
| 第 11 週 | Review of steel member design as per ANSI/AISC 341 & 360 (I) |
| 第 12 週 | Review of steel member design as per ANSI/AISC 341 & 360 (II) |
| 第 13 週 | Special topic to be decided based on one of the following i. Seismic performance assessment using nonlinear analysis. ii. Lessons learned from past earthquakes. iii. Devices for structural response control. iv. Advanced construction materials |
| 第 14 週 | Group presentation (15-20 mins for each group) on the final design: i. Detailed structural + foundation scheme drawings. ii. Detailed sample member design drawings. iii. Design report. iv. Construction method statements and schedule. v. Physical models (optional). |
