Via this course, students will know how English has evolved through time, from Old English, Middle English to Modern English. Having English as an example, they will understand how various non-linguistic factors may affect the development of a language, changing its vocabulary, structure, sounds, and even its users. They will also appreciate variations among English and within many other languages in the world, and will be able to gain international and diachronic perspectives on language-related issues. At the same time, they will be able to apply linguistics/sociolinguistics knowledge to analyze languages and their uses. Finally, through learning assignments and activities, they will develop the four core skills of English: Reading: by reading chapters from the textbook (assigned reading for every week) Writing: by writing summaries of the assigned readings (both as homework assignments and as class activities), one speech script for the midterm evaluation and one for the final evaluation, scripts for group presentations/projects, and response for discussion Listening: by watching episodes from the BBC documentary The Adventure of English (A video clip of around 20 minutes will be played each week. Students are also advised to watch the episodes themselves a few times before/after classes.) Speaking: by speaking English for group presentations/projects, for assigned readings, and for discussion topics brought up in classes
