Through analyzing authentic models of effective communication demonstrated by the instructor and TED Talks on diverse topics, this course is designed to: 1. demystify academic writing by isolating its basic moves and representing them in the form of templates; 2. guide students to voice their opinions in a logical and intelligible manner through a mini debate; 3. provide students with a hands-on experience of structuring their essay/presentation through a Post-it workshop. 4. lead students to build the following mindset and skill set to achieve future academic and personal success: a. empathy in writing/presentation b. presentation literacy and fundamental know-how about slide design c. cohesive visualization of coherent arguments
[20%] Weekly written response to assigned TED Talks or assigned readings (Best 5 out of 6, 4 points each: 2% summary + 1% contents + 1% structure) [20%] Weekly quiz on assigned TED Talks (Best 5 out of 6, 4 points each) [20%] 2 individual presentations (10% each: including intro 2% + contents 4% + structure 2% + slide design 2%) [10%] Post-it workshop (You are responsible for bringing to the workshop 25 ideas related to your topic, 0.4% each) [15%] Presentation of your term paper (Intro 3% + contents 5% + structure 5% + slide design 2%) [15%] Final term paper (contents 7.5% + structure 7.5%)
