In this class, we will learn how to write about literature and film. We will start with the acquisition of some crucial skills in academic writing: how to summarize a reading, how to quote passages, how to respond to others' arguments, how to use transition words, how to come up with sound arguments, how to incorporate metacommentary into your paragraphs, how to write an essay in MLA style, and so on. After a series of practices, we will move on to discuss a small number of literary or cinematic works and workshop one another's drafts.

Attendance You have to sign up for your attendance each week. Whenever you miss one hour of class, I will dock 1 point (out of 10). If you are late for more than ten minutes, you are considered absent that hour. If you have to miss classes for legitimate reasons, please let me know in advance/in person. A doctor's note must come with your sick leave. I will not count your legitimate leaves as absences unless there are more than THREE times. If you miss more than three classes (even for legitimate reasons), those absences will more or less affect your final score. If you are on personal leave, you are not entitled to any exemption. Quizzes We will have six quizzes on GRE vocabulary. Your highest five quiz scores will enter your final score. I will notify you the dates of our quizzes when I email you our GRE vocabulary. Late Work I will NOT accept any late work unless you are sick or have an emergency, and I only give you a two-day extension (in most cases). You turn in all your assignments in person or online. Watch out for the deadlines. I will be strict about them. Individual Conferences and Workshops We will have several individual conferences throughout this term. Come to these 20-minute meetings with questions about our readings, your thesis paragraph, cited passages, and an outline. The conferences are mandatory; they replace regular classes. During workshops, you need to exchange your drafts with your classmates. At the end of each workshop, you need to give your partners a short paragraph of assessment. Use the following questions to formulate your paragraph: What is the argument in this draft? Is the argument sound? What do you particularly like about this draft? Are there any words or passages unclear, awkward, confusing, or turgid? What do you think of the structure of this draft? What do you think of the diction and tone in this draft? Revisions I believe in revisions, but I do not accept revisions once your papers are graded. Use the workshops and individual conferences to revise your drafts. Revision is not simply about correcting grammatical errors; it could also mean formulating counterarguments and restructuring your paper. Word Count Show me how long your paper is at the end of your paper, including footnotes or endnotes but not the "Works Cited" section. Email Exchange • Do not send me email via E3. Email me at chku@nycu.edu.tw. • Do not send me your draft and ask for comments online. Use emails for short questions or notifications. If you would like to discuss your draft with me, make an appointment and see me in person. • Identify yourself. Do not simply blurt out your questions; please give me context. • Have a clear subject line. A random subject line makes it difficult to track the message. I will ignore messages without a subject line. • Address me as Richard, Chung-Hao, or Professor/Prof. Ku. • Read our syllabus before you ask questions. The answers may be on the syllabus.
