The central aim of this course is to teach students how to be critical thinkers. Students will learn how to: identify, map, and construct different kinds of arguments; evaluate arguments by identifying particular strengths and weaknesses of arguments; use various scientific reasoning skills (e.g., hypothesis testing, causal inference); evaluate definitions; and identify kinds of ambiguity. Methods of Instruction: Lectures: Each week, I will devote part of our class time to lecturing about the topics to be covered that week. Classroom exercises: Each week, students will complete brief exercises that allow them to practice the skills that I will teach that week. Argument mapping project: Students will work in groups of four or five to construct a map of a complex argument presented in a text. Argument evaluation project: Students will work in groups of four or five to evaluate a complex argument presented in a text.
