Our current understanding of what music is and its significance is still very much affected by the rise of aesthetics and the musical art since the 18th-century Europe. Issues such as subjectivity, language, judgment, imagination, romanticism are all connected with music, with contributions from the English empiricist, the French Encyclopédistes, Rousseau, Kant, and Herder et al. This course opts for a historical rather than normative approach and engages historical documents to make sense of the legacy of European music in today's global context. Designed for musicology majors and other students who are interested in independent study; participants will learn to read historical sources and current literature sensitively and critically, and gain experience in academic writing.
This is a course designed for master students majoring in music, an advanced understanding in the history of 18th-century European music therefore is expected.
Course will be conducted mostly in 3-hour sessions: please take note of the schedule. Course home page at: https://e3new.nctu.edu.tw/.
Participation 10%: everyone should read everything (so start early!) and contribute to the discussion. Weekly Reading Notes 40%: 8*300 words summary and two questions for discussion. Group Presentations 30%: 2*100 min. The presentations should take the form of Context-Content-Critique, followed by open discussion. Papers 20%: 2,000 words revised versions of the oral presentation of your choice.
