The aim of this course is to enhance students' critical English reading abilities and develop students’ ability to write well-developed paragraphs of college writing. Students will read a variety of texts styles with enhanced fluency following coherent and effective use of reading strategies. Students will also actively engage in extensive reading with a critical perspective (e.g., distinguishing between fact and opinion, evaluating sources, and identifying points of view).For writing, students will build their paragraph writing skills and eventually learn to the ability to write a five paragraph essay following logical division of ideas.
Be sure to attend the first class for details in course introduction.
1. Attendance & in-class quizzes: 30% Regular quizzes about basic academic vocabulary will be conducted. Role call will be done in the beginning of every class. 30 minutes late will be regarded as absence. 1.5 points will be deducted from your final academic grade for each unexcused absence. A valid proof is required for your excused absence. 2. Midterm & Final: 30% There will be two formal in-class midterm and final exam based on the reading and writing materials covered in class. If a re-schedual of the exam date is needed, do inform me at two weeks before, or any make-up exam wont be given 3. Group assignments: 15% In-class discussion and Group presentation are made weekly. Students are required to actively participate in those activities and finish the assigned task. Your group presentation will be evaluated both by the teacher and by other groups of students. 4. Paragraph writing assignments & Individual writing 25% Students are required to hand in assignments of paragraph writing periodically and to turn in a 5 paragraph essay at the end of the semester. Specific details will be given in our first class.
