新聞英語

The goal of this course is to help students develop confidence and fluency in listening and reading various English news. To this end, students have opportunities to learn and practice the useful vocabulary used in different news topics such as social, political, entertainment and sports. In addition, students will learn the strategies to comprehend the news stories by analyzing syntax and structure. It is hoped that students can demonstrate comprehension strategies and develop fluency, both when listening to and reading news stories by the end of the semester. Students taking this course are required to give a presentation based on the topic assigned and they are encouraged to be actively involved in the presentations and class discussions concerning any topic introduced.

Students intending to take this course must complete the required Freshman English courses and obtain passing grades.

Midterm (25%) Final Exam (25%) Presentation (25%) Attendance (10%) Perfect attendance is rewarded with the full 10 %. There will be a 3% deduction for each absence without a medical note/approval. 4 absences without medical notes/ approvals will lead to students failing the course. Participation (15%) Every student is expected to actively contribute to class discussion. Students volunteering answers throughout the semester will be rewarded with up to 15% of this grade.

No specific textbooks will be used. Materials include BBC and CNN news reports and articles from both domestic and international newspapers.
