Courses Goals: •Complete a large portion of a coherent, accurate, well documented, and persuasive MA thesis/PhD. dissertation. Your draft must include, at a minimum, an acceptable abstract, literature review, and methods section. The draft must meet departmental standards as they apply to these parts of the thesis and must clearly answer the Seven Key Questions; • Develop oral presentation skills for delivery of a conference paper and a persuasive defense of the thesis with clear and sufficient visual and oral explanations of your research; • Develop oral and written communication skills necessary to communicate your research to someone mathematically trained, but not knowledgeable in your area of expertise.
The teacher will distribute and explain a detailed syllabus with a tentative course schedule in the first class. Please do not be absent unless you have a good reason. If you are absent without a reason, you will be automatically removed from the list.
Participation: Learning is a social act and can be best achieved within a community of learners (this class) through engaging, collaborative, and participatory class discussions. Each student is expected to engage in the assigned readings carefully, actively, and critically and come prepared to be an active participant of class discussions. Your individual contributions and serious participation in class activities benefit the entire community of learners (the class). Be an independent learner: You and you alone are responsible for your learning (not the instructor), and you also have an impact on the learning of others. Just going through the motions of completing course assignments at the bare minimum level of effort is not the type of academic work that earns a good grade. Points will be deducted off late work. If you feel you might have difficulty turning in any assignments, please contact me as soon as possible before the due date. Be honest: Cheating, plagiarizing, and photocopying textbooks are NOT tolerated and will result in the failure of the course. Attend all classes: Our class meets only once a week. The types and content of the activities and discussions that take place in the classroom cannot be accessed outside of class; therefore, attendance is essential. Attendance will be taken everyday in the first five minutes of class, so be punctual. Unreasonably high unexcused absenteeism or chronic tardiness denotes a casual, less than professional attitude and a lack of commitment towards learning. However, we are all human so 3 unexcused absences are allowed per semester. More than 3 unexcused absences will lead to failure of this course. Writing Consultations: Each student is suggested to set up at least 25 minutes of Writing Consultation per semester to talk about your writing. You will earn 2 extra credit points added on your semester grade. All essays must be typed on Microsoft Word (or other similar software) following these the guidelines: Paper: A4 Font: Times New Roman Heading: Include your full name, ID number, course number, assignment date Assignment Title: Skip one line, and then center your title. Margins: Leave a 1-inch margin (2.54 cm) on the left and right. Spacing: Double-space the body All class materials will be uploaded on Google docs Since our course schedule is tentative, I reserve the right to adjust the course schedule and due dates as necessary due to unforeseeable circumstances. Please be advised that you are responsible for keeping track of, and complying with, any changes to the schedule and/or the assignment deadlines.
