This course is a sequel to EDU1203 Subject-related Teaching Materials & Methods, a prerequisite for this class. This semester we aim to (1) reinforce the TESOL/TEFL theories, knowledge, and pedagogical skills introduced in the previous semester, (2) support pre-service English teachers’ continuous development of TESOL content and professional skills as identified by the Taiwan Ministry of Education (MOE), and (3) engage in reflective practice to connect the observation and teaching experience obtained from the filed placement with their teacher education preparation coursework. The major component of this course is to provide the students with the opportunity to observe high school English classes and ultimately teach in a real-life setting. The first-hand experience in teaching and the feedback received from experienced teachers in the field serves as an invaluable means of practice and skill integration for the pre-service teachers. Class meetings will be a combination of lectures, collaborative group work, participation in Dance with Stars PLC workshops, lesson preparation, microteachings, and filed placement. Throughout the semester, the students are expected to show active participation and to reflect on their professional development as an English teacher. Upon completion of this course students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate ELT pedagogical and professional knowledge and skills; 2. Participate in ongoing professional dialogue with their cooperating teachers and/or supervisors; 3. Identify key issues in the actual ELT class setting; 4. Make informed decisions about their instructional designs and pedagogies; 5. Integrate online and offline ELT teaching materials and resources (e.g., education technology) effectively to support their English teaching; 6. Collaborate effectively in teams to build the knowledge and develop the skills needed to be a competent teacher; and 7. Demonstrate a reflective attitude toward their own learning and teaching processes in the field placement and learning portfolios.
