概述

This course aims to introduce students to the study of speech sounds. The basic goals of this course are two-fold. One is to teach students phonetic aspects of speech sounds (how the sounds are articulated and the acoustic properties of speech), and the other is to teach students the ways in which speech sounds are structured in human languages (how to organize primary linguistic data, make descriptive generalizations, and provide formal analyses). We will examine a wide range of phonetics and phonological data sets from a variety of languages.

教學方式

Absences If you must be absent from class, you take responsibility for the absence. Notify us in advance through the university official leave system. Review the slides posted on E3, get notes from classmates and ask for help from the instructor or the TAs. • If you continue to be late on homework or if you miss classes frequently, I’d ask you to withdraw this course. I won’t go over the course materials with you for the class that you missed randomly. You may take the course again when you are ready to commit.

評分方式

Attendance and participation: 5% Homework assignments: 45% 4 reviews: 40% Final project: 10% Assignments Throughout the course, there will be 9 assignments that you will hand in for credit. They will account for 45% of your final grade. • Collaboration is permitted on homework exercises, but you must write up your own assignment individually, and you must assume full responsibility for your own understanding of the course material. Copying others’ work is plagiarism and there will be zero tolerance for the academic dishonesty. • Failure to complete these assignments by the due date (before class starts) will result in grades of zero, unless you have a valid excuse accompanied by a note from a university or medical official. You will be given plenty of time to do those assignments and projects in advance, so plan for last minute problems by setting your own earlier deadline. • Please type your homework whenever possible using word processors. Reviews Throughout the course, there will be 4 reviews that you need to complete. Your TAs will provide with a tutorial session before each review to help you prepare.
Final Project You will describe the phonetics and phonology of a language as a group project (more details to follow). You will present the phonetics/phonology of the language to the class on the last day of the course.
