漢語音韻學

Note: I. We will meet on Google Meet at least for the first two weeks (https://meet.google.com/avz-rkqr-syh). In this course, we will look into the phonological system of Chinese, focusing on Taiwan Mandarin, including its consonants and vowels, and suprasegmental properties (tones, syllables). We will examine the phonological processes such as syllable contractions and tone sandhi, and consider extra-linguistic factors, such as age and dialectal background in affecting these processes.

Introduction to Linguistics I Phonetics & Phonology

- Readings: Students will be expected to do the readings (generally from the textbook or papers posted on e3) and participate in class discussion, including leading discussion of at least one reading. - To ensure that everyone has done the readings before coming to the class, you are required to ask at least 2 question about each of the readings. Please post the question(s) on the google form on the Tuesday before each class. The discussion board will close by the midnight each Tuesday (I mean it!). - Exercise (2-5 questions per week): You are encouraged to discuss homework problems with your classmates, but you must write up the solution on your own. ALL homework assignments must be your own. We collect homework assignment in a 15-min window at the beginning of each class (I mean this too!) - Occasional quizzes - Three exams

- Class participation and preparation 15% - Assignments and quizzes 30% - Three exams 45% (15% each with the last one accumulative) - Presentation 10%
