This course aims to introduce some classical cultural theories for students to engage with contemporary critical issues. We divide this course into three units. The first unit focuses on the concept of “Enlightenment” in Schmidt, Kant, Fichte, Foucault, and some other contemporary thinkers. The second unit traces the evolution of Foucault's thoughts on discourse and practice in relation of the birth of postmodern “theory.” The third unit aims to introduce students to an array of classics central to the cultural studies project and its diverse methodologies, so as to arrive at an understanding of how culture matters in the intersections of geography, history, race, class, nation, and migration.
Two take home essays of 2000-2500 words each, topics for which will be given in due course. Both essays will be due at end of term. The students are required to submit three response papers (2 pages each) detailing their reactions to the assigned readings by the end of the unit, and a final paper (5 pages) explaining the function or role of literature in the works we read by the end of the semester.

Unit I: The Enlightenment and Its Contemporary Relevance啟蒙思潮與當代情境 Instructor: Yuan-Horng Chu(朱元鴻授課) We may have read some of the literature on Enlightenment, but often read them detached from the background of its time, and do not necessarily understand the context of the struggle from the historical and social background. If we read them closely attached to the era of Afklärung, such as the Prussian society in the last quarter of the eighteenth Century, these literatures will reveal that the Enlightenment is passionately engaged in its contemporary struggle: that is, against religious authorities and secular rulers: the censorship of thoughts, knowledge, and expressions. We will find that many contemporary societies in the 21st century are still in a similar situation, such as the control and screening of the mass media, the Internet and social media in China and some Islamic countries, the purge with laws against blasphemy or incitement to subversion, as well as similar struggles for freedom of thought and speech. This module re-reads several key documents of the late eighteenth Century, through Michel Foucault’s interpretation of Afklärung and modernity, and the current controversies between the freedom of speech recognized by Western societies and the crimes of Blasphemy purged in Islamic societies, to understand the continuing relevance of Enlightenment to our contemporary world. |
