概述

Half a century ago, communication systems mostly employ analog signal transmission, whereas today’s communication systems mostly employ digital signal transmission. This course introduces the students to the fundamental theory and current practices of digital communication. The focus is on the technologies for digital signal transmission. The emphasis is on data transmissions from a single transmitter to a single receiver, where typically used technologies include modulation and demodulation, synchronization, equalization, and encoding and decoding. And the course also discusses related performance analysis. The technologies discussed in this course are sometimes referred to as the physical layer (PHY layer) technologies in the overall communication system. (Please pay attention to the prerequisites.)

先修科目

1. 必須修過大學部「訊號與系統」及「通訊原理」。(Must have had "Signals and Systems" and "Principles of Communication Systems," both undergraduate courses.) 2. 強烈建議修過大學部「數位通訊原理」。(It is strongly recommended that you have also taken the undergraduate course "Principles of Digital Communication.") 3. 須具備基本之隨機過程觀念。這些觀念通常會在大學部「通訊原理」課程中講授,亦會在研究所「隨機過程」課程中講授。(Need to possess basic concepts in Stochastic Processes, as normally covered in undergraduate "Principles of Communication Systems" and also covered in the graduate course "Stochastic Processes.") 4. 須具備之工程數學背景,主要為大學程度之線性代數、機率、常微分方程。無須修過複變函數,但須具有運用複數之能力。(The engineering mathematics background needed includes undergraduate-level Linear Algebra, Probability, and Ordinary Differential Equations. You also need to be able to work with complex numbers, although a course in Complex Variables is not required.)
