*The classes will be 2 hours each on Monday 10:10-12:00. (授課時間:星期一10:10-12:00) This course is designed to provide students with an introductory understanding of international standards applicable to the Corporate Responsibility to protect and respect international human rights and remedy violations. Students who participate actively will: (1) acquire substantive knowledge about the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (Ruggie Principles), which establish standards for corporations to prevent and address negative impacts on human rights linked to business activity; and (2) gain practical insight into the business and human rights issues and impacts of major sectors, including: 1) Extractive (e.g., oil and gold), 2) Manufacturing, 3) Technology, 4) Medicine, and 5) Artificial Intelligence. Each class will be based on real-world case studies from Asia and worldwide, which are outlined in the syllabus.
Students are required to read English materials and interact with the teacher during classes. Full participation is expected. *出席為本課程評分主要標準,請儘早選入,並以不中途退課者為優先。
The course is based on the Socratic teaching method, which requires student participation in class discussion. In addition to lectures and class discussions, this course utilises a wide range of experiential and participatory learning methods, including practical exercises, group work, simulations, and group presentations. All instruction, discussions, and assignments will be conducted in English.
Class participation is expected and evaluated. Students who take this course for credit should be well prepared for each class and participate in class discussion. The final grade will consist of class participation (50%) and final group presentation (50%).
