The aim of this class is to provide an understanding of numerical methods applied to engineering problems in hydrology and hydraulics. It is designed to provide a good understanding of these methods and hands-on opportunities for students to write their own ones. Students will also acquire the necessary skills to use practical computational software such as HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS to solve engineering problems with competence and confidence. The class will introduce a variety of numerical methods using a series of problems including advection and diffusion. Topics covered will include: • Conceptual hydrologic models. • Explicit and implicit finite difference methods. • Analysis of convergence, stability, and accuracy of numerical schemes.
