Course description: Provide students with knowledge of statistical physics. At the end of the course, you will be able to apply statistical physics to different branches of physics including condensed matter physics and high energy physics. The following topics will be covered. (1) Review of thermodynamics (2) Microcanonical ensemble (3) Canonical ensemble (4) Grandcanonical ensemble (5) Quantum statisitical mechamics (6) Bose systems (7) Fermi systems (8) Theory of phase transitions
College-level quantum physics and thermal physics.
Blackboard presentation supplemented by PPT presentation
Homework (30%), Midterm I (30%), and Final (40%)
There is no required textbooks. However, the following three books are recommended. (1) Statistical Mechanics by Kerson Huang (2) Statistical Mechanics by R. K. Pathria (3) Equilibrium Statistical Mechances by Gene Mazenko
