Course Description This course explores the use of statistical methods as analytical tools for understanding and analyzing business problems and for supporting business decision-making. You will be taught how to compute statistics using a hand calculator and Excel. However, this course will emphasize decision-making based on statistics. That is, when faced with a problem or question you must know which procedure to use, must be able to use it correctly, must be able to draw the correct conclusions from the results, and must be able to report the results accurately and clearly. Objectives/Goals Students in this course shall: - Understand statistical methods useful for analyzing data, with specific application to problems of business and economics - Apply quantitative tools for the areas of marketing, financial and managerial accounting, corporate finance, and applied operational methods. - Learn to use EXCEL and Minitab for statistical analysis.
General Rules 1. No Late Homework/Report Due date for each assignment will be announced in class as well as be posted on NYCU’s eCampus III (http://e3.nycu.edu.tw ). No late homework will be accepted. You will not receive any credits for late (or missing) work. 2. No make-up exam Should you not be able to make the scheduled exam, it is your responsibility to contact your instructor PRIOR to the exam. No make-up exam will be given unless in an extreme emergency, which must be documented by a physician or college official, in advance when possible. 3. No cheating Cheating (in Exam, Homework, Report, etc.) means you will not pass this class. More serious consequences will follow. Research Project Each student is expected to team up with others to prepare for a statistical analysis project of a market research on a new or improved product or service. The detail requirements of this project will be announced in class. The project will be presented in class and a written report is also expected.
