動態影像與時間性的批評:亞洲電影裡的酷兒與群鬼

This course investigates what figures of queers and ghosts mean in Asian cinema. We will read postcolonial theory, theories of film and the moving image, contemporary queer thoughts on affects and negativity, and recent scholarly literature on Asian cinema and queer cinema. We will also inquire about the relations between images and history, and between images and the archive—and see how figures of ghosts and queers destabilize the theoretical assumptions of film images as visual evidence and documents of history. This course is both a theory course and a cinema studies course. We will not only read theoretical texts but also watch film texts carefully and see how we may analyze films through theory, as well as problematize theory through films. 本課將以亞洲電影出發,由當代電影與動態影像理論、後殖民理論與酷兒理論的角度交叉碰撞與思索鬼魂與酷兒形象所代表的理論意義。我們會思索影像與時間和記憶的關係,也會討論影像與歷史的理論聯繫,更會探討影像與檔案問題。 這會是理論與電影與動態影像研究並重的一堂課;我們將以理論思索影像,也會反過來,以影像思索理論。

This is a graduate seminar—which means that students are expected to be active participants of the class (no passive consumers, please.) 1. In-class presentation: 20% Each week, students should take turns to present their reading of weekly assigned materials. Those who are not presenting should also read the materials in advance. * Those who are absent more than three times without a good reason will get a “zero” for this item. 2. Weekly notes + class participation: 20% Students should upload their notes on course readings and films every two weeks. (For undergrad students: every four weeks.) 3. Presentation of final projects: 20% Each student will present a talk on her/his/their final project at the end of the semester. 4. Term paper/ final project: 40 % Students who take this course should write a term paper. (Length: 20-25 pages; undergrad students: 15 pages). Students may use the theories they learned in class to analyze films, moving-image works, or other art forms. They may also use films, moving-image works, or art texts of their choice to complicate or problematize theory. * Those who have backgrounds in art-making may produce a film/video work, make a work of art, design a computer game, or curate a mini film series, et cetera, as the final project for the course, provided they have discussed the project with the instructor in advance. 5. No auditors, please. 6. No plagiarism in any course assignments. Those caught with plagiarism will get a “zero” as their final course grade. 本課以研究所討論課(seminar)的形式進行。同學須是課堂上的主動參與者,而不是被動的消費者。因此除了書面報告與期末作業,主動參與課堂討論亦是學生學習與教師評量的重點。 1. 課堂口頭報告及討論:20% 修課同學必須輪流在課堂上做口頭報告。報告內容為當週閱讀之文獻。 沒有報告的同學亦應讀完課堂要求閱讀之文獻,並參與討論。 *無故缺席3次以上者,本項零分。 2. 閱讀與觀影筆記:20% 修課同學須針對課程閱讀與觀影文獻書寫筆記,並上傳於Slack的每週頻道。 研究生:至少每二週一次;大學部至少每四週一次。 3. 期末口頭報告:20% 內容為報告自己想做的期末作業或期末作品題目、採取路徑與欲討論或思考之理論等。其他同學則提供回應與建議。 4. 期末書面報告:40% 同學自行選取一至數個影像或藝術文本,以本堂課所討論之理論做分析。亦可反向思考,由影像與藝術文本出發,探討所讀理論文本之侷限。 論文篇幅:研究生論文7500字以上,大學部同學約4000字。 *有創作背景的同學可以以電影或錄像作品、其他形式藝術作品、電腦遊戲設計、影像策展等等方式取代期末論文書寫,但須先與授課教師討論並取得同意。 5. 本課強調主動性學習,修課同學的積極參與至關重要,故不接受旁聽。 6. 本課有嚴格學術倫理要求。違反者期末成績以0分計算。
