概述

This seminar aims to orient students toward re-thinking the problematics of Inter-Asia Cultural Studies (IACS). This course delimits its scope to foreground the questions and formations of present conditions shaped by the residues of the historical past and the contemporary geo-economic and geopolitical forces. This course will also address several fundamental questions: What is Cultural Study? What is the objective of Inter-Asia Cultural Studies? Is there any disciplinary methodology or theoretical framework that we need to adopt in doing Inter-Asia Cultural Studies? We will investigate the complex relations and geopolitics of East/Southeast and South Asian societies. We will consider relevant factors, including the following dimensions: nation-building and the movement of decolonization, the Cold War regime, the shadow of Pax Americana, the rise of China, and the age of neoliberal globalization. Our discussion will address the following questions: racism, nationalism, social inequality, gender discrimination, migration, ethnic minority, sexual minority, citizenship politics, border politics, religious conflict, crony capitalism, cyber security control, platform economy, virtual network, etc. We encourage multi-disciplinary or trans-disciplinary approaches. Also, the inter-connected, inter-influencing, and inter-conflicting historical processes in this region oblige us to go beyond national boundaries. Inter-Asia Cultural Studies, therefore, needs to be transdisciplinary, transnational, and trans-local practices. Inter-Asia Cultural Studies would not take “Asia” as a totality of any pre-existing entity to retrieve or a future utopia to aim. On the contrary, we will re-think the internal imperialism and colonialism in historical and contemporary societies. The inter-Asian perspective, therefore, offers a new mode of complex thinking. It acknowledges the inter-relational conflicts and tensions in the past histories that have left their traces and are still functioning in contemporary societies. Inter-Asia Cultural Studies needs to be comparative, improvisational, and critical to expose and to dismantle the apparatus of the socio-cultural formation behind the scenes that are still triggering the uneven development and unequal partitions within the societies. Toward the last section of this course, we invite guest lecturers from the University System of Taiwan and from abroad to address the issues covered in our class. This course is a required course for the students of the International Program in Inter-Asia Cultural Study. It is also open to both MA and Ph.D. students in SRCS as an elective course. We will conduct this course in bi-lingual mode.

A. Students are expected to (1) complete at least 2 required readings before class, (2) participate in the discussion, (3) take turns to lead and facilitate discussion in the class, and (4) submit four two-page journals (1000-1500 words), in principle every three weeks, on the issues that concern or interest them, preferably on the same track of your project. and (5) a final term paper (ranging from 4000-6000 words in English, and 6000-8000 words in Chinese). B. Students can form study groups (4-5 people per group) for the presentation to lead discussions. The group in charge of the report is expected to present with PPT and provide additional materials on current conditions, artistic works, and film clips to facilitate the discussion. Cases of students’ home countries are especially welcome. C. The final paper should be in the form of a research paper (ranging from 4000-6000 words in English and 6000-8000 words in Chinese) on a chosen topic related to their research projects. I expect doctoral students to submit a more extensive paper. The final term paper can be a continuation or an extension of the reading journal. Therefore, it is strongly encouraged that students start to conceive the topic of their final project from the beginning of this course. Titles and thesis statements should be submitted by the 10th week after individual conferences with the instructor. We will arrange oral presentations in the form of the colloquium in the 17th and 18th week, and the final revised paper will be due two weeks after the oral presentation. Tri-weekly Response: 30% Participation/Discussion: 30% Final Project: 40%

We've read and discussed the historical narrative and the governmental propaganda by the Indonesian government about the 1965-1966 massacre in our first classes. We've also witnessed a similar historical narrative of the founding trauma in the process of nation-building in Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, and so on. Through various cultural policies, media manipulation, artistic exhibition, educational textbooks, the ruling regimes re-count and reinforce the "collective memories" allegedly shared by all community members. This operation of collective identities defines the rightful members of the community and debases or even excludes the ones who do not belong. They become "the part of no part," as Ranciere, Balibar, and Badiou discussed, voiceless, invisible, and do not enjoy equal access to the community. What similarities or differences have you observed in these governmental operations? Have you noticed similar patterns in your own countries? In the post-WWII era, what are the similarities or differences of the political situation in Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Malaysia, and Singapore? To what degree are these political regimes under the influence of the Cold War regime? Malaysia and Singapore were not separated countries. These two countries shared the same history and people for an extended period. What are these two countries separated? How do the citizenship policies of these two countries differ from one another? Why do Singaporeans look down upon some Malaysian migrant workers? Taiwan, Hong Kong, and South Korea all experienced colonial rules in the past. How did the colonial experience influence the internal partition of the people? Why were there states of emergency in Taiwan, South Korea, and Malaysia in the Cold War Era? Why are there massacres in Taiwan and South Korea and massive concentration camps in Malaysia? Can you compare the different politics of citizenship in these Northeast and Southeast countries? In Black Skin, White Masks, Franz Fanon analyzed the machenism of the "epidermization of the sense of inferiority." The colonized people want to dye their skin, adjust their intonation, and modify their taste to feel better about themselves. This prison-house of the senses exposed the structure of cultural imposition. We see the institution and measurement (skin color, intonation, dress, behavior, etc.) and a scheme of visibility that shaped the object of desire, the object of imitation, the structure of desire, and the regime of identification. Do you notice similar colonial mechanisms in your own countries? Are there similar cases in your countries as described in Joyce C.H. Liu's article "The Translations of Ethos and the Unheimlich: Wu Tien-chang and the Post-Martial Law Era in Taiwan"? Do you know any artist that reflected "epidermization of the sense of inferiority" in an artistic way? We are having a holiday next week. The temporary "guest laborer" system began in the 1970s and 1980s in East, and Southeast Asia originated in the German policy of Gastarbeiter, guest worker, after WWII. Even though many of the Gastarbeiter in Europe became permanent residents, and their descendants constituted a large population within the host countries, the guest laborer system remained the same in East and Southeast Asia. Without residency or citizenship status, the temporary migrant workers cannot apply the Standard Labor Law and are exposed to highly precarious conditions and violations of fundamental human rights. Does it happen to your country? Why and why not?

第 15 週UST Clusters Lecture Series -- NCU Gender and Sexuality 性/別研究 Topic: Sex and Civilization--Sex and Civilization The Discourse of Ai and Yin in Nam Nữ Giao Hợp Phụ Luận in Early Modern Vietnam and the Imperialist Imaginary of the Perfect Human Beings Abstract By the late 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, Vietnamese society struggled for independence and fighting against the French colonial empire. Due to armed uprisings' failures, Vietnamese patriots and intellectuals sought social reform as the alternative means of anti-colonialism. The modernization had taken place in every aspect of culture, politics, and society, including the health sector. A significant quantity of Chinese editions of Western and Japanese books was imported into Vietnam under the category of Tân Thư (新書). Nam Nữ Giao Hợp Phụ Luận 《男女交合附論》is one of those Tân Thư circulated at the time. Its publication marked the first time Western scientific knowledge of sexology was introduced into Vietnam. Previous readings on Nam Nữ Giao Hợp Phụ Luận examine the book within the modernization process of traditional Vietnamese medicine. With this thesis, I would like to read Nam Nữ Giao Hợp Phụ Luận from the perspective of gender studies and sex governance. The thesis analyses the Discourse of Ai (愛), which means love, and Yin (淫), which indicates “sex,” to figure out the ideal men and women the book desires to create. This study examines the social, historical and political meanings of affection, sexual desire, reproduction, and personal body, which are usually considered as belonging to the individual realm. In a larger context of imperialism during the 19th and 20th centuries, it is necessary to see the relation between love, sex, and civilization. The defines of appropriate and inappropriate Ai and Yin reflect how the binaries between backward and modernity, the colonizers and colonized, the superior race and inferior race were created and taken for granted until now. The perfect human beings depicted in Nữ Giao Hợp Phụ Luận and its English original version, Creative and Sexual Science: or Manhood, Womanhood, and Their Mutual Interrelations; Love, its Laws, Power, etc.... written by the American Phrenologist O.S. Fowler, could be linked to the effect of imperialism on a global scale during the historical period of Early Modern. The circulation of knowledge in its material forms back and forth among Europe, the U.S., Japan, China, and Vietnam is worth concerning. The tension between new and old empires, the unequal relations between the East and the West would be revealed through how an imaginary of the perfect race is produced and spread worldwide.
