大一英文(一)

Freshman English I is an integrated course designed to develop students’ four English skills (listening, speaking, reading, & writing) with an emphasis on speaking and listening. In this course, students will 1. Identify listening problems and develop listening strategies and skills, 2. Gain confidence in speaking and improve speaking fluency, pronunciation, and conversation strategies, 3. Develop general reading skills, including word skills and comprehension strategies, 4. Develop writing fluency by writing a short passage in 170-200 words. 5. Develop writing fluency by giving students opportunities to articulate ideas in short writings of approximately 170-200 words.For example, students can respond to topics addressed in class through writing assignments that focus on content and expression of ideas, rather than the structure of the written English. Other practical examples could include emails, note-taking, letter writing or comments.

Midterm and Final exams are approaches to having students engage in memorizing academic vocabulary and useful idioms regularly. In-class lecture will be interwoven with teacher-centered and student-centered activities. A 10-minute weekly quiz at the end of each class serve as the record of the students' participation, understanding, as well as attendance. There will be at least five group presentations in this semester, aiming to offer students more opportunities to present themselves in English and experience the value of teamwork.
