The teacher will distribute and explain a detailed syllabus on the first class. Unless you have a good reason, please do not be absent. If you are absent without prior notice, you will be automatically removed from the list. Please note that you are required to use online platforms and tools to participate in online classes. Please prepare equipment in advance.
Participate: Learning is a social act and can be best achieved within a community of learners (this class) through engaging, collaborative, and participatory class discussions. Each student is expected to engage in the assigned readings carefully, actively, and critically and come prepared to be an active participant of class discussions. Your individual contributions and serious participation in class activities benefit the entire community of learners (the class). Be an independent learner: You and you alone are responsible for your learning (not the instructor), and you also have an impact on the learning of others. Just going through the motions of completing course assignments at the bare minimum level of effort is not the type of academic work that earns a good grade. Points will be deducted off late work. If you feel you might have difficulty turning in any assignments, please contact me as soon as possible before the due date. Attend all classes: Attendance will be taken in every class and the class does not allow any excused absences. That means not coming to class even with a legitimate reason or excuse will result in no attendance and participation marks for that class. Having said that, students do not need to email the teacher with an excuse since no points will be granted for not showing up to class. However, please note that more than 3 unexcused absences with no further explanation denotes a lack of effort and dedication to the course and will result in a direct failure of the course. Take this course only if you are sure that you can dedicate time and effort. Covid19 alternative: Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, some classes may be online. Please go to our course Google docs before every class to see if there are any announcements about the course changes.
Attendance 10% If you miss class, you cannot make up any of it afterwards. Coming to class and being an active learner is very important in this course. Please start doing the tests early; DO NOT wait until the deadline is around the corner! Required writing assignment (a passage of 170-200 words) 5% You will watch a video and write a passage on that video. Students will be taught how to write a short passage that contains a topic sentence and supporting details. Please follow the structure taught in class to obtain a full score for this assignment.
