The aim of this course is to enhance students' critical English reading abilities and develop students’ ability to write well-developed paragraphs of college writing. Students are expected in this course to: (1) read a variety of texts styles with a critical perspective (i.e. distinguishing facts and opinions, evaluating sources, and identifying points of view, etc.) (2) be familiar with the effective use of reading strategies to enhance reading fluency. (3) build paragraph writing skills and eventually learn the ability to write a five-paragraph essay following logical division of ideas.

1. Participation is required in any English class; reading and writing courses need your active thinking and participation, too. Silent and inactive sit-ins, sleeping, or using cell phones in class will make your participation credits suffer or not to be granted. (*No free points for ‘participation’!) 2. Due to various activities that require students’ participation, regular attendance is very important. Absence up to eight hours will make your semester grade suffer. Absence may be authorized under exceptional circumstances, if a proof of justifiable reason can be provided. 3. Always bring the textbook, A4 loose-leaf paper or paper notebook, to keep your learning record. 4. Writing assignment must be submitted on time. Every writing loses 10% per day when the assignment is late (including weekend). Presentations should be made according to the designated date, and you cannot make up the presentation if you miss. If you have any problem with the presentation date, please come to me as soon as possible.
