Please visit the following link for instructions and rules concerning the online format of this class. Failure to comply will result in the removal from the class list. The teacher will distribute and explain a detailed syllabus on the first class. Unless you have a good reason, please do not be absent. If you are absent without prior notice, you will be automatically removed from the list.
Attend all classes: Since our course is online (at least for the first couple of weeks, perhaps even longer), please ensure that you can get online smoothly with both microphone and webcam working. You will get attendance points ONLY if you have all equipment ready. If you come online but with no mic or no webcam, you will NOT get the attendance score for that day. Webcam and mic ON is a requirement to get attendance points. Attendance will be taken in every class and the class does not allow any excused absences. That means not coming to class even with a legitimate reason or excuse will result in no attendance and participation marks for that class. Having said that, students do not need to email the teacher with an excuse since no points will be granted for not showing up to class. However, please note that more than 3 unexcused absences with no further explanation denotes a lack of effort and dedication to the course and will result in a direct failure of the course. Take this course only if you are sure that you can dedicate time and effort. Participate: Learning is a social act and can be best achieved within a community of learners (this class) through engaging, collaborative, and participatory class discussions. Each student is expected to engage in the assigned readings carefully, actively, and critically and come prepared to be an active participant of class discussions. Your individual contributions and serious participation in class activities benefit the entire community of learners (the class). Be an independent learner: You and you alone are responsible for your learning (not the instructor), and you also have an impact on the learning of others. Just going through the motions of completing course assignments at the bare minimum level of effort is not the type of academic work that earns a good grade. Points will be deducted off late work. If you feel you might have difficulty turning in any assignments, please contact me as soon as possible before the due date.
10% Attendance If you miss class, you cannot make up any of it afterwards. Coming to class and being an active learner is very important in this course. 20% Participation This includes quizzes, in-class activities, and homework. The more you participate, the higher your score will be. 20% Discussions and individual impromptu speaking Students will be put in groups of 4 and take on different roles for different sessions. During impromptu sessions, the groups will have some time to do breakout room discussions. Then the speaker will deliver an impromptu presentation on the question. Quesitons will be related to what is taught on that week. 5% VOD passport Each student is required to attend at least 5 sessions of English Table held by NCTU Language Center (for more information: http://ltrc.nctu.edu.tw/). You need to collect a stamp or the teacher’s signature on the VOD Passport after each session you attend. Another option is attending Toastmaster’s International, a club that focuses on English public speaking skills. You may attend 1 Toastmaster’s in place of 5 English Tables. For more information please visit: Hsinchu http://hsinchu.toastmastersclubs.org/ Chubei https://www.toastmasters.org/Find-a-Club/07791525-07791525 ** If the face to face meetings have been switched to online, you can still participate and get credit. Just make sure you have evidence to show you joined (print screen, pictures, videos etc...) 20% Midterm (Oral exam) Students will take individual oral exams that will be recorded. The recordings will be uploaded on E3, so that students can re-listen/watch their response and learn from their mistakes. 25% Individual Final Presentations (10 min) Students will deliver an individual presentation on a topic of their choice (approved by the teacher). Your presentation should include activities/content that encourage class participation. Be creative and use the skills learnt in class.
