概述

This is a class to be taught in English. It is a class in English but it is not a class to learn English-- students should already have a command of English to read, write and communicate in English. The purpose of the course is to teach students about Chinese art which include the vast and diverse objects such as jade carvings, lacquer and porcelain wares, painted scrolls and fans, sculptures in stone, bronze and wood, calligraphy and murals. The class will use art historical methods to introduce the various ways of understanding these objects: as art objects to be appreciated stylistically and as objects of function. In addition to the class lectures, another component of the class will be the required visits to museums in and around Taipei in order to gain first-hand experience in "looking" at and “talking” about Chinese art. These visits will include the National Palace Museum and the Museum of the Institute of History and Philology at the Academia Sinica, both of which house some of the best and most representative Chinese art works outside of China. Other museum/gallery visits may be added. There will be a required writing assignment in the semester in which students will turn in one essay (@1000 words) based on articles (indicated with *) and museum/gallery visits. There might also be short reports (@250 words) about objects viewed in museums. Furthermore, there will be a mid-term and final exam, all of which have to be written in English. The teaching methods will consist of lectures with the aid of power-point images. The lectures will follow the contents of the required textbook. The class will be made up of the two-hour lectures on campus and will also include the required museum/gallery visits. These may be held as a class visit or arranged at a time outside of the regular class meeting time. Depending on the size of the class and other logistical factors, students may be asked to go visit the museum(s) on their own time.

教學方式

The aim of the class is to teach students about what is art of China. It is hoped that students will not only learn about Chinese art, but will also become familiar with art historical methods of understanding art. Another objective of the class is to help students think critically about art and culture. The class will delve into issues of what have historically been considered Chinese art,by whom, when and why? Finally, the class hopes to let students think about what Chinese art means to them. Hence the class will pay special attention to the role of Taiwan in our understanding of art of China today.
