Basic Scientific English 2021-2022. 1st Semester. Wednesday 13-20 to 15-10 Ralph Kirby's email: ralph_kirby@icloud.com This Course is Online due to Changes in Taiwan's Quarantine Entry Requirements The lectures are provided on e-campus as Powerpoint files. If you have any problems at all with any aspect of the course, please e-mail me. There will be no timetabled examinations for this course and you will be assessed based on your four submitted assignments. The timetable below will be kept to as much as possible, but there is some flexibility in the assignment dates. Process for handing in Assignments 1) Access assignments from e-campus and download 2) Read relevant files 3) Answer assignment in Microsoft Word 4) Submit assignment to E3, the new e-campus (preferred), or if that is not possible, e-mail the assignment to ralph_kirby@icloud.com (this might be necessary if you have problems loading to e-campus or are late returning the assignment). If you e-mail, make sure that you include your student number, the course name " Basic Scientific Writing" and your name in that order in the Subject Box of the e-mail. Objectives To introduce Scientific Writing in English that will identify the important aspects of spelling, grammar, sentence construction and organization of writing that cause problems when beginning to write scientific papers and similar documents. At the end of the course the student should be able to look critically at their own scientific writing in English and identify problems in it. Outline This course will consist of Lectures (2 hours) and two Assignments over 9 weeks. Assessment The marks for the two assignments form the final course mark. Each assignment is worth 50% of the overall mark. Thus if you fail to submit one assignment you fail. If you fail to get a mark or a returned assignment and you believe you have submitted, there is probably a problem with ecampus and you need to contact me.
