This course aims to introduce fundamental concepts in digital communications. The major emphasis is on bit transmission from a single transmitter to a single receiver, and important performance criteria include (1) data rate (the number of bits transmitted per second), (2) bit error rate, (the probability that a bit is incorrectly received), (3) energy transmitted per bit, and (4) signal bandwidth. More specifically, this course covers (1) signal space representation of digital modulation signals, (2) the signal processing techniques at the receiver that optimize over one or more of the above-mentioned performance criteria, (3) synchronization tasks at receivers, (4) fundamentals of information theory, (5) introductory source coding and error control coding, and (6) characteristics of wireless channels.
