Teaching assistant: Angela 游師晴 (angelayu0207@gmail.com) COURSE REGULATIONS 1. Class attendance is mandatory. An official leave from the University Administration must be obtained for an absence at the “Student’s Leave Application System” (學生請假系統) at https://stuoffcourse.nycu.edu.tw/. a. Students who have had their leaves granted will receive the due credit for the quiz they have missed. For details, see the section “Weekly Quizzes” below. b. Students who wish to leave early from class have to report themselves to the T.A. and fill up the “Early Dismissal Application Form” (中途退席單). A 0.8 reduction of their quiz grade of the week will be imposed. If, for example, the grade earned is 5.0, it will be reduced to 4.0. c. Penalties. Students who leave the class without filing the Early Dismissal Application at the 2nd hour will receive a 0.33 reduction (the grade earned at 5.0 will be reduced to 1.65), and at the 3rd hour, a 0.66 reduction (the grade earned at 5.0 reduced to 3.3). 2. Classroom decorum: a. No food or beverage (except drinking water) is allowed in class. b. Electronic devices (laptops, tablets, iPads, etc.) are discouraged from use in class. c. Cellular phones must not be seen or used during class sessions and breaks. d. No internet connection is allowed through any devices except in a presentation. e. No taping, recording, podcasting, or photo-taking is allowed in class unless permission is granted. 3. Correspondence: a. Write your e-mail in either English or Chinese. b. Always specify your English or Chinese name in full, as well as your student’s ID, in all your correspondence. c. All course-related announcements will be sent to your e-mail address on file at the website of the NYCU Online Course Registration System (https://course. nycu.edu.tw/) and/or e-Campus (https://e3.nycu.edu.tw). Keep good maintenance of your mailbox and check your mails regularly. d. Internet activities and course grades will be posted at our e-Campus page. To enter, key in the user ID and password you use for logging in at the Course Registration site. e. Whom to write to: write to the T.A. only if an error in your grade is suspected. Otherwise, direct all your queries to the instructor. 4. Reserved materials. To locate the book items and films on DVD on reserve at the library, follow these steps: a. at the library search page (http://webpac.lib.nctu.edu.tw/), click on the tag “Course Reserves” (指定參考書) above; b. at the slot “Field to search” (查詢欄位), pull down the window and select “Course Number” (課程號碼); c. key in the current course number as 1567 to retrieve the reserved list. 5. Instructions and details on the following items will be released separately at e-Campus: midterm and final examinations (each exam contains a vocabulary test, identification questions, and short essay writing). 6. Rights. The instructor reserves the final and exclusive rights to amend any portion of the course syllabus, including the grading scale, course schedule, regulations, and instructions on assignments and examinations. Weekly Quizzes 1. The 13 weekly quizzes, starting in week 1, aim to examine if the assigned readings have been read, but not necessarily if they have been fully comprehended. 2. Each quiz has four questions and will be graded with the scale of 1 to 5. 3. Quizzes will be held as soon as the class begins. Latecomers cannot take the quiz, but must report themselves to the instructor and receive 1.0 as their quiz grade. 4. A student who is granted an official leave will receive his or her quiz grade’s semester average as the grade of the quiz he or she has missed. For example, if the average of all the quizzes a student has taken is 4.65, he or she shall receive 4.65 for the missing quiz, if a leave has been granted. 5. The due credit a student shall receive for a granted leave will only be calculated and released by the end of the semester. Film Quizzes 1. Film quizzes take up 10 points of the semester grades. 2. Two (2) films are assigned and will be screened at HB/F326. The screening dates are given as follows: a. Film Event 1: Les Misérables (1998), dir. Bille August, 134 mins. March 21, 2022 (Monday) at 6:00 p.m. b. Film Event 2: Doctor Zhivago (1965), dir. David Lean, 197 min. May 9, 2022 (Monday) at 6:00 p.m. 3. The films on DVD are also available on one-day reserve at the Main Library. 4. The films will be quizzed respectively in class in Weeks 9 (midterm) and 16 (final). 5. In each quiz there are 12 multiple-choice questions, each of which is worth 1 point. The highest grade you can score for each quiz, however, is 10 points. 6. The quizzes mean to check whether you have watched the films, not whether you remember the details in the plots. A rough knowledge about the characters’ names and their relations will help, which you could look up at the Internet Movie Database (http://www.imdb.com/) and the Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/). 7. No materials or notes shall be consulted during any of the quizzes.
Grading Scale Weekly quizzes (the average of all weekly quizzes multiplied by 6) 30 points Midterm examination 25 points Final examination 35 points Film quizzes (on 2 assigned films) 10 points 5% of extra bonus (if full attendance, with total 85 as ceiling) Total 100 points If you have a full attendance the whole semester, you will receive a 5% extra grade for your overall semester grade. For example, if your grade is 80, it will be increased to 84. If after the adjustment your grade exceeds 85, you receive 85. This bonus grade, as well as the due credit(s) for your missing quiz(zes) (see below), will only be calculated and added to your overall grade by the semester’s end.
