The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction of fundamental properties of Chinese for those who are interested in teaching Chinese as a foreign language through a way by having Chinese compared with English in aspects such as the phonological system, the morphological structure, and the syntactic structures. We attempt to present the empirical facts of Chinese faithfully, and, whenever possible, state the generalizations we arrive at clearly. Pedagogically, this course is explicitly designed for students who are not necessarily to have much linguistic background. Thus, we try to minimize the use of technical linguistic terminology, and those terms that do occur in the class will be carefully defined.
Introduction to Linguistics I and II A native (or near-native) speaker of Chinese
Regular attendance; Participation in discussion
