One of the core questions in linguistics is how speech perception and production are coupled to enable effective communication between interlocutors and/or to initiate potential sound change. To address the structure of the two modules of speech processing, we will focus on a specific methodology, spontaneous phonetic imitation, which refers to the subconscious shifts in one’s production patterns prompted by listening to a model talker. This methodology has been shown to be versatile and demonstrated its sensitivity to a wide range of topics within phonetics and phonology, including the following themes: • Phonetic saliency, non-contrastive phonetic features • Phonological structures of one’s native language • Cases of phonemic near-mergers • L2 acquisition and phonetic imitation • Social factors and speech accommodation While familiarizing students with the current theories and experimental methodology that can be used to effectively address theoretical questions, the seminar ultimately aims to help students develop their own research questions and determine viable methodologies to test their hypotheses. This class presupposes that students have already had a solid knowledge of phonetics and phonology.
Prerequisites: Phonetics & Phonology, or permission of the instructor
