學術訓練討論課

課程概述與目標: 本課程之設計在於訓練學生的批判思考、學術寫作以及進行研究的能力,協助學生撰寫學期報告,以及進行博碩士論文的提案。透過這門課,學生可以儘早開始論文提案的工作,同時與指導教授討論,進行研究計畫的資料收集以及文獻回顧,以便這學期完成論文提案的草稿。 我們將規劃一系列的課堂作業以及工作坊,帶領學生熟悉圖書館電子資源,收集資料,建立書目,擬定論文主旨、假設、研究問題,撰寫研究背景與文獻回顧、規劃章節大綱,最後完成論文提案或是試寫核心章節。 博士班的同學同時可以挑選進階作業模式,例如規劃授課大綱,撰寫書評,或是研討會評介,以便預備日後學術研究發展的必要訓練。 除了課堂作業之外,我們也將邀請幾次演講,以便學生觀摩學習其他研究者的研究問題意識,研究方法,概念架構,以及論證方式。學生可以在學期初推薦講者,供授課老師參考。 本課程為必修課,3學分。 Course Objectives This course is designed to develop students’ critical thinking, academic paper writing skills, and research abilities for their on-going project and their thesis proposals. Students can choose to develop a thesis proposal to engage with his or her research project in the early stages. In this semester, the instructor will design workshops and assignments to lead students to go through the process: familiarizing electronic resources and citation style, searching research materials, building up working bibliography and annotated bibliography, drafting proposal outlines, thesis statements, note-taking, literature review and research background, introduction, project summary, to the final proposal and/or core chapter. Doctoral students may choose the advanced mode of assignment, such as syllabus design, book review, or conference review, to replace some of the exercises. In addition to the classroom discussions and assignments, we will invite some scholars to give lectures so that students can learn from their problematics, research questions, methodology, conceptual frameworks, and modes of argumentations. Students are welcome to recommend speakers for the instructor to consider. This course is a required course, three credits.

Priority will be given to SRCS students preparing for their thesis/dissertation proposal.

作業說明: 作業一:註解書目(Annotated Bibliography) 1. 首先就你有興趣的主題廣泛閱讀,收集詳細書目(國內外碩博士論文,期刊論文,網站資料等)2. 涉獵與你的問題相關的書籍或論文之後,如果這些文獻對你思考的問題有所啟發,就將其製作成註解書目資料檔案:內容包括書籍或論文的完整出版資料以及圖書館查詢資料;扼要的以二、三百字說明本項文獻與你所研究問題的相關之處(可以是理論、觀點、概念的啟發,研究方法的借用或對比,或是闡說研究問題的例證或資料)。作業繳交十二項書目。 作業二:書評 (Writing a Book Review): 廣泛涉獵之後再選擇與這個問題相關的、你自己最喜歡的一本書或碩博士論文,仔細閱讀全書,閱讀的過程中,可以先設法掌握作者的論證主旨,根據其論證發展方式,觀察其論證過程是否有疏漏或是尚未完全發揮之處?是否有隱藏而未明言的前提?是否有你不同意的論點?然後撰寫約三千字的書評,試以各約三分之一篇幅處理以下三部分:(1)全書內容摘要介紹,(2)這本書的特殊貢獻、在處理相似主題或同類書籍論文中出色或卓越之處,以及(3)這本書或論文作者的盲點、侷限或缺陷。 作業三:獎學金搜尋與研究計畫撰寫 (Searching for Research Grants) 從研究所開始,到以後的學術研究生涯,都會需要向他人溝通你的研究構想,爭取研究所需的支持,包括研究經費補助、進用檔案資料、協助田野關係等等。而獲得有聲望的公私立基金會贊助,不僅是執行研究計畫的資源,也是年輕學者獲得認可的履歷記錄。作業四要求每位同學搜尋國內或國際各類型的研究計畫獎助方案,仔細閱讀其宗旨、對象範圍、資格條件、履行義務,並留意其審查程序以及該項基金歷年獎助之論文題目與成果。選擇自己研究興趣與資格符合者,認真依據其格式與要求項目,改編一份完整的研究計畫書。此作業同時訓練研究計畫的撰寫與研究資源的搜尋。經課堂討論批評後可進一步發展為申請各項碩博士生論文研究獎學金之計畫書。 作業四:會議報導 (Conference Report) 參加一個與您的研究興趣有關的會議,並就此發表可投稿的會議報導。 參加會議的整個過程,取得會議議程,盡可能取得發表的論文; 觀察每個角色及其表現,發表人,主持人,評論人或與談人,以及他們之間的交流以及現場的討論。 預期該報告將使那些關心會議主題但無法參加的讀者對會議的進行情況和可能引人興趣的事件插曲有一個大致的了解。 作業五(博班):教學課程計畫 (Writing a Syllabus) 博班生即將預見教學機會,本作業要求以自己專長的領域,設計一份大學課程講授計畫 (Syllabus)。新進教學人員在申請教學職位時,無論專任或兼任,這都是必逢的要求,而且所提的教學課程計畫,將在系、院兩級的課程委員會受到審查。教學經驗與授課規劃的思慮是否周延,從所提的教學課程計畫都可一窺大概。請設想授課的性質(例如本科或通識,大一二或大三四的課程,必修課或選修課,演講授課Lecture或是研討課Seminar,修課人數等因素)說明課程宗旨,詳列每週單元進度與讀物的課程大綱,作業與考試等課程要求與成績配置。 作業五(碩班):研究計畫 (Research Proposal) 研究計畫是與他人溝通研究構想的依據:你這個問題為什麼有意思?有哪些人曾經思考、討論過這個問題?你覺得他們的想法怎麼樣?你的想法跟他們有什麼不同?為了讓你的聽眾或讀者更為瞭解、接受你的想法,你將要進一步處理或論證些什麼問題?可能進一步會往哪個方向界定歷史時期、探索文獻、進行田野或訪談?簡單說,研究計畫的要點是:讓別人聽得懂你的問題,同意這個問題真的有意思、很重要、值得去研究,也期待你的進一步結果。這個時候,你的研究計畫當然也該有清晰明確的主題(標題)了。 研究計畫的發表與公聽,是研究構想最早的發表交流機會,發表人提出充分發展的研究計畫,包括問題意識的鋪陳、相關文獻的評述、設想的研究取徑、預期的困難與成果的重要性等等,尋求批評討論與建議,以供後續研究的修改或參考,評論人則貢獻批評與補充的意見。每位發表人將以約八千字的篇幅,以12-15分鐘口頭發表。於發表兩週前與授課老師協商邀請校內外相關專長的學長擔任評論,並於一週前將計畫書稿寄交評論人與同學閱讀。 課程要求 Course Requirements 演講參與和討論占學期成績25%。五項作業,各占學期成績15%。缺席(含作業討論與演講)超過三次者沒有學期成績,請自動辦理退選。 Exercises explained: 1, Writing Annotated Bibliography This exercise requires 12 items, as practice, of annotated notes on literatures relevant to your thesis research. Each note is about half page. 2, Writing a Book Review Write a three-page publishable book review. The review should consist of three objectives, each roughly in one page. The first is to summarize the contents of the book, parts and chapters, as precise as possible. The second is to note the peculiar contributions of the book. The third is to indicate the limitations and blind spots of the book. 3, Searching for Research Grants Search and find an applicable grant or fellowship that is relevant and helpful to your dissertation research project. Read carefully its terms and requirements, write an application proposal accordingly. (With this exercise discussed in class and improved, many of our students eventually obtained research funding, from Taiwan or abroad, for their research) 4, Writing a Conference Report Participate a conference relevant to your research interests and write a publishable report on it. Attend the full course of the conference; obtain the conference agenda and the papers if available. Observe each and every role and their performance, the presentations, the presiders, the discussants, and the exchange between them and the discussions from the floor. This report is expected to let the readers whom were concerned with the conference theme but weren’t able to attend to have a general grasp of what was going on and what had happened excitingly at the conference. 5, Writing a Syllabus Expecting a teaching position in a college, write a syllabus from your area of expertise. Since a syllabus will be required and reviewed by any possible teaching position, as a practice, you should carefully deliberate every detail of it (course for freshman, sophomore, junior or senior years, in the form of lecture or seminar, limitation on numbers and qualifications of student enrolled, form of exercise or exam feasible for your own grading labor, etc.). The syllabus should include a statement of course purposes, weekly progress of topics and readings, course requirements such as exam, exercise, attendance, in class discussion etc., and finally their respective percentage in composition of the grade.
