This course introduces theories of affect studies to students. Given that gender and sexuality studies, as well as film and media studies, are the disciplines that have produced the most theoretically exciting writings on affects since the last two decades, the course will have a dual emphasis on how affects are discussed and conceptualized in these disciplines.
1. All course readings are in English. 2. As usual, we will actively use social media as our virtual class discussion space. Check out our space on Slack: https://1102affecttheory.slack.com 3. Maximum class size: 16 students.
1. This course is taught bilingually in English and Mandarin Chinese. No auditors, please.
This is a graduate seminar—which means that students are expected to be active participants of the class (no passive consumers, please.) 1. In-class presentation: 20% Each week, students should take turns to present their reading of weekly assigned materials. Those who are not presenting should also read the materials in advance. * Those who are absent more than three times without a good reason will get a “zero” for this item. 2. Weekly notes + class participation: 20% Students should upload their notes on course readings and films every two weeks. (For undergrad students: every four weeks.) 3. Term paper/ final project: 60 % Students who take this course should write a term paper. (Length: 20-25 pages; undergrad students: 15 pages). Students may use the theories they learned in class to analyze films, moving-image works, or other media/art forms. They may also use films, moving-image works, or media/art texts of their choice to complicate or problematize theory. * Those who have backgrounds in art-/media- making may produce a film/video work, make a work of art, design a computer game, or curate a mini film series or exhibition, et cetera, as the final project for the course, provided they have discussed the project with the instructor in advance. 4. No auditors, please. 5. No plagiarism in any course assignments. Those caught with plagiarism will get a “zero” as their final course grade.
