概述

課程概述與目標: Media psychology is a dynamic and interdisciplinary field that can be applied to a wide range of topics. This course will not only focus on how traditional research issues such as media violence are presented in new media but also on emerging communication phenomena brought about by new technologies such as video games and virtual reality. In this course, we will explore the psychology of these interactive experiences to better understand the motivations for and consequences of their use. The goal of this course is for you to get a sense of the field, understand the complex interaction between media and individuals and their effects on human well-being, cognition, and emotions, and ask the right questions to extend your understanding of media experiences in the future. The students are expected to be able to critically analyze and interpret how scholars in these fields frame research issues and investigate the effects of media on human beings, build logical and precise arguments to advance the knowledge, and propose a clear-designed, well-argued research proposal at the end of the semester.

評分方式

1. Class participation and after-class activities (20%): Class participation is based on your ongoing contributions to each class meeting. You are expected to read the required readings each week and make multiple, substantive contributions during each class session. Both the quality and quantity of your discussions and questions will be evaluated. There will be random after-class activities, and students are required to submit activity reports or projects in class. 2. Group paper summarizing (20%): Your 20% grade will be based on weekly group summaries of assigned papers, due on E3 at 13:00 one day before class. For every week we have readings, we expect each group to summarize the articles' key points and critical contributions. It should be one page long and consist of two parts: (1) a summary including key argument and contributions of the article, (2) thoughts of future research direction, and (3) a table of all the crucial elements (e.g., IV, DV, method, sample, hypotheses, conclusion), this is optional, not graded. Be prepared to talk about your reaction in class every week. (Late assignment deducts 5 points per day.) 3. Discussion leading (20%): The 20% of your grade will go to leading discussion. Each group will sign up to lead the class discussion at least twice throughout the semester. Discussion leaders are required to do three things. (1) They are required to read the readings of the week in greater depth and look for additional materials that are not listed in the required readings. (2) They will begin the discussion by posing a question, or taking a controversial position, or showing us something interesting that is related to the topic of the day (perhaps something outside the texts). (3) They will introduce the fundamental concepts of the articles and help keep the discussion moving. Please use lots of examples/news stories to link to the theory. Also, they should point us toward other resources that may help us understand this topic of inquiry. A presentation with slides is preferred. 4. Project Proposal (10%): An original research paper is expected for graduate students as the term projects. You are welcome to do the term project individually or with other students (no more than 2 people in one group). In the ninth week, the students will present an outline/brief proposal of their term projects. Describe your proposed project so that people understand what it is and why it is valuable. 5. Term project (30%): The grade of your term project will be based on the quality of your presentation (10%) and the original research paper (20%). The paper is expected to be of publishable quality, focusing on the theory, issue, or context of your choice. It begins with a synthesis of relevant theory and research, concludes with a set of testable hypotheses, and includes a comprehensive list of references. The final paper should follow the APA 7th style conventions, about 10 pages long, double spaced, 12-point type, and will be carefully edited into clear, concise, and grammatical language prose. Turgid, windy, and/or ungrammatical submissions will be returned for rewrites without comment.
