Freshman English II is an integrated 4-skill (listening, speaking, reading, & writing) language curriculum with a focus on reading and writing. This course will address reading and paragraph writing while supporting the communicative skills addressed in the first semester. In this course, students will:  Develop critical reading skills,  Engage in reflection on readings,  Apply insights gained from readings,  Orally paraphrase and summarize texts, and reflect on the texts in oral discussion,  Write complete paragraphs with topic sentences, relevant supporting details, transition words, and concluding sentences,  Continue to develop listening and speaking skills.

*** Students who do not show up during the first class will no longer be in this class unless a valid leave is presented! ***Students should participate in the class actively and ask the teacher in person if he or she has trouble understanding the teacher's written instructions. *** If students skip the class more than 5 times without any proper reason, he or she will receive 0 points on participation and attendance. ***No late assignments will be accepted as students should be aware of the deadlines set by the teacher. *** Textbook readings might be assigned to students to read at home first. *** Constant asking for a leave for having stomachaches and headaches without any proof will be deemed only as excuses. *** Students are welcome to ask the instructor questions face to face after the class; students should take responsibility for their own learning instead of keeping emailing the instructor without spending time reading the written instructions first.

Attendance: 10% Group discussion on assigned textbook readings + individual participation bonus (responding to the instructor’s questions for class discussion): 5% quizzes on assigned textbook readings: 5% Assigned textbook reading written assignments: 5% Midterm: 20% Final exam: 20% Required writing assignments: 10% (2 paragraph assignments, a minimum of 200 words each) Language enhancement activities: 15%: including GEPT related learning activities (5%): one in class and 2 online or in the lab; and self-study stamps in VOD passport: 5 stamps (10%). 1-min presentation based on a theme-based reading: 10 % (The instructor will announce how to conduct an online discussion forum based on students' presentations beforehand.) *** The assigned reading units listed on the syllabus might be subject to change based on the learning pace of the students. ***online GEPT practice tests :http://140.113.9.17/index.aspx
