The aim of this course is to enhance students' critical English reading abilities and develop students’ ability to write well-developed paragraphs of college writing. Students are expected in this course to: (1) read a variety of texts styles with a critical perspective (i.e. distinguishing facts and opinions, evaluating sources, and identifying points of view, etc.) (2) be familiar with the effective use of reading strategies to enhance reading fluency. (3) build paragraph writing skills and eventually learn the ability to write a five-paragraph essay following logical division of ideas.

(1) Students should always bring pens, pencils, paper notebooks or loose-leaf paper to keep notes or learning records. To achieve better learning results, students are encouraged to bring laptops and tablets to access to online teaching materials in the classroom, or print them out and bring to the classroom, rather than using cell phones. (2) Oral participation is required in all English classes. Writing courses need students’ active thinking and participation, too. Silent and inactive sit-ins, sleeping, or using cell phones in class will cause your participation credits (10%) not to be granted. (3) Regular attendance is important due to various learning tasks that requires students’ participation. Absence may suffer the result of in-class activities (15%) when you do not make up for them; you need exchange a student's contact number to enquire about what you have lost. Absence may be authorized under exceptional circumstances, if a proof of justifiable reason can be provided. Being late for each period of class for over 15 minutes, or leaving without notice is considered absence. Both lateness and absence will make you lose points in 'attendance' category. (4) Writing assignment must be submitted on time. Every writing assignment loses 10% per day when the assignment is late (including weekend). Presentations should be made according to the date you sign up, and you cannot make up the presentation if you miss it. If you have any problem with the presentation date, please come to fix the date beforehand. Absence cannot be an excuse of not knowing assignment submission or deadline.
