The aim of this course is to enhance students' critical English reading abilities and develop students’ ability to write well-developed paragraphs of college writing. Students will read a variety of texts styles with enhanced fluency following coherent and effective use of reading strategies. Students will also actively engage in extensive reading with a critical perspective (e.g., distinguishing between fact and opinion, evaluating sources, and identifying points of view).For writing, students will build their paragraph writing skills and eventually learn to the ability to write a five paragraph essay following logical division of ideas.
Basic knowledge of English sentence structures and paragraph organization/ High intermediate level of English ability(修畢英文基礎課程或具備等同CEFR B1英語文能力 ) This course is open to non-English majors of sophomore, junior, senior or students who have one of qualifications below(大二以上非外文系學生或具下列資格之大一學生選修): 1. Freshmen who has one of the following qualifications (特殊資格之大一學生): (a) English score in College Entrance Examination or Department Required Test is higher than the standard of Language Center. (入學學測英文15級分或指考英文分數前10%) (b) Pass English official proficiency test and hold GEPT or TOEIC certificate ( 通過其他類考試如全民英檢/多益申請資格大一同學,持語言中心申請之證明單者) 2. 2. Graduate students who get the approval of the class instructor to add the course (想進修並經任課教師同意加簽之研究生)
This course is student-centered. This means you are invited to be “Masters” not “Guests”. Preparation: You are required to read the textbook material before class. Participation: Active participation in classroom discussions and activities is essential to advance your English skills. Assignments & Tests: No late work will be accepted and no make-up tests will be given unless it is for an official reason with prior approval. Attendance: If you are absent, it is your responsibility to learn what was done in class that day. Every absence will lower your attendance grade by 3 points (final score), and being late reduces it by 0.5 point (final score). More than 3 unexcused absences may cause you to fail the course. Exams: The mid-term will be a written exam and will focus on vocabulary, reading comprehension and paragraph writing. The final will be reading comprehension and essay writing. Final Grades will be based on: 1. Attendance: 10% 2. In-class exercises and discussions: 12% 3. Essay Writing Assignment: 8% 4. Oral presentations: 10% 5. Quizzes: 15% 6. Learning Passport (7 stamps) 5% (10 stamps) 7% 7.Mid-term Writing Exam: 20% 8.Final Writing Exam : 20%
