You must come to the classroom for the first day. *第一堂請務必準時到課,否則視為自動放棄修課權利* The teacher will distribute and explain a detailed syllabus on the first class. 教學方式

 Participate: Learning is a social act and can be best achieved within a community of learners (this class) through engaging, collaborative, and participatory class discussions. Each student is expected to engage in the assigned readings carefully, actively, and critically and come prepared to be an active participant of class discussions. Your individual contributions and serious participation in class activities benefit the entire community of learners (the class).  Be an independent learner: You and you alone are responsible for your learning (not the instructor), and you also have an impact on the learning of others. Just going through the motions of completing course assignments at the bare minimum level of effort is not the type of academic work that earns a good grade. Points will be deducted off late work. If you feel you might have difficulty turning in any assignments, please contact me as soon as possible before the due date. Cheating is NOT tolerated and will result in the failure of the course.  Attend all classes: Attendance will be taken in every class and the class does not allow any excused absences. That means not coming to class even with a legitimate reason or excuse will result in no attendance and participation marks for that class. Having said that, students do not need to email the teacher with an excuse since no points will be granted for not showing up to class. However, please note that more than 3 unexcused absences with no further explanation denotes a lack of effort and dedication to the course and will result in a direct failure of the course. Take this course only if you are sure that you can dedicate time and effort.

評分方式

 Attendance 10% If you miss class, you cannot make up any of it afterwards. Coming to class and being an active learner is very important in this course.  Participation 20% This includes quizzes, in-class activities, and homework. The more you participate, the higher your score will be.  Impromptu speaking 10% All students will have a chance to come on stage to make a short 1-minute impromptu speaking presentation on stage on an open-ended question related to our textbook. It’s your responsibility to be present in one of the three scheduled impromptu slots.  Discussion leaders 20% Students will be split into groups (4-5 students). During group discussion leader weeks, groups will work together on two chapters (20-40 minutes for each chapter) chosen by the instructor. During the session, you will choose one discussion leader that will lead the team to accomplish the intended learning outcomes. Generally, the team will read the article, go over new vocabulary, and do some of the book activities to assist comprehension. After you understand the reading, your team will contribute to constructing the assessment that all students will later on do.  Midterm Exam 20% This will be a paper-based exam.  Final Exam 20% This will be a paper-based exam
