Attend all classes: Being on time to class as an active learner is very important in this course. Participate: Students are expected to engage actively and come prepared to be an active participant in class discussions. Language use: Please use English as the main language of communication even in discussions with your peers.
10% Attendance If you miss class, you cannot make up any of it afterwards. Coming to class and being an active learner is very important in this course. 20% Participation This includes quizzes, in-class activities, and homework. The more you participate, the higher your score will be. 5% VOD passport Each student is required to attend at least 5 sessions of English Table held by NYCU Language Center (for more information:https://ltrc.nctu.edu.tw//room/index.php). You need to collect a stamp or the teacher’s signature on the VOD Passport after each session you attend. 10% Group impromptu speaking Students will be put in groups of 4 and take on different roles for different sessions. During impromptu sessions, the groups will have some time to do discussions. Then a speaker will deliver an impromptu presentation on the question. Questions will be related to what is taught in class. Your score is the average of all the speakers that go on stage. If you happen to be absent on the two scheduled impromptu weeks, you will get 0% and the score cannot be made up. If you obviously do no work in the group, you may also get 0%. 20% Midterm Individual Oral Exam The midterm has two parts: Part 1 90% Students will take individual oral exams that will be recorded. Part 2 10% The recordings will be uploaded on E3. Students will re-listen/watch their response and write ONE reflection paragraph on parts that can be improved to learn from their own mistakes. The reflection should follow a good paragraph structure (same as the impromptu structure) with no grammar mistakes. 25% Final Group Hosting Activity Students will get into 6 groups of 4-5 students and host an online event for the class to join. This includes choosing the online platform, sending invitations, designing interactive activities, answering Q&A, and making a good ending. Hosts are expected to include activities/content that encourage participation, to be creative, and to use the skills learned in class. The entire class (teacher and students) will assess your performance via a google forms grading sheet. Your final score is not just given by the teacher; it will be an average of the score input by ALL the participants. Time allocation: Host time: 20-30 minutes Q&A session: 10 minutes 10% Final Audience Assessment Students have the responsibility to understand the grading criteria, seriously participate in classmate’s hosting activities, and give a fair assessment score. Your score WILL impact the final score of your classmates so please take this part seriously. You need to input well thought out scores for ALL the different groups to get full credit for this part. If you fail to participate or do this part recklessly, you will not get any points for this part.
